Clydebank in 1940

November 30th, 2011 · 5 Comments · Cooperative Learning, Social Studies

As part of our World War 2 topic, we have recreated a street scene on our classroom wall. First we looked at photographs taken of Clydebank in Scotland in the late 1930s. We investigated the types of houses and buildings then worked with a partner to draw them. Next we worked in our cooperative learning teams to create an imaginary family to represent the people living in Clydebank in 1939 during the outbreak of World War 2. We had to research what type of jobs they might have done, what clothes they would have worn and what they did for hobbies and entertainment in the 1930s and 1940s.

In class we listened to Neville Chamberlain’s speech on the 3rd Septmeber 1939, which broke the news that Britain had declared war on Germany. We will now investigate the impact that war precautions like blackout, gas masks, evacuation, conscription and rationing will have on our ‘families’
